Biography
Born in Pittsburgh in 1928, Andy Warhol studied at the Carnegie Institute of Technology before moving to New York in 1949 to begin a highly successful career as a commercial artist, working with department stores and advertising agencies.
By the early 1960s, Warhol was silk-screening enlarged photographic images directly onto canvas and paper. The technique let him reproduce images of consumer products such as Campbell's Soup and Coca-Cola — themselves mechanically reproduced — and expand his subjects to include movie stars and media celebrities like Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, and Chairman Mao. In parallel he painted the underside of American culture: car crashes, race riots, and the electric chair.
In the late 1960s Warhol turned increasingly to film. He managed the rock group The Velvet Underground, founded Interview magazine, and became the most sought-after celebrity portraitist of his day. Through the 1970s and 1980s he ran a virtual factory of paintings and prints. As the seminal figure behind the emergence of Pop Art, he ultimately turned everything into pop culture.
